Antioxidants protect against cadmium toxicity

The potential role of combined anti-oxidants against cadmium toxicity on liver of rats.

Cadmium is a widely distributed toxic trace metal. When exposed to this element, it can cause severe damage to the liver. This study evaluated the effects of antioxidants against cadmium-induced liver toxicity. The experiments were performed with rats. For 8 days, the animals were given cadmium and – 1 hour prior to the treatment with cadmium – vitamin C plus vitamin E. The results showed that the antioxidants were able to protect the liver against cadmium toxicity. More details can be found in the study.
