Combined therapy with vitamin E and Piper betle leaves inhibits brain cancer (glioma)

Gamma-tocotrienol and hydroxy-chavicol synergistically inhibits growth and induces apoptosis of human glioma cells.

This study examined the interaction between vitamin E, in the form of gamma-tocotrienol, and hydroxychavicol from the betel plant and the effect of this combination on the death of brain cancer cells (glioma). For this purpose human brain tumor cells were treated with these two substances individually and in combination at various doses. When treated with one of these two substances a weak inhibitory effect on the growth of the tumor cells could be achieved. When used together, the interaction between the two substances (synergy) significantly intensified this inhibitory effect and was effective even at low doses.
