Omega-3 fatty acids and B vitamins preserve brain functions

Omega-3 Fatty Acid Status Enhances the Prevention of Cognitive Decline by B Vitamins in Mild Cognitive Impairment.

Research has found that B vitamin treatment slows the decline of brain functions. On this basis, the present study evaluated whether blood levels of omega-3 fatty acids interact with the effects of B vitamin treatment in patients with mental impairment. 266 participants aged 70 years or older were given B vitamins (folic acid, vitamins B6 and B12) or a placebo for 2 years. Mental function and blood levels of omega-3 fatty acids were measured. When omega-3 fatty acid levels were low, B vitamin treatment had no effect on mental decline. However, when omega-3 levels were high, B vitamins were able to slow mental decline. More details can be found in the study.
