Summary

This review evaluated the protective effects of omega-3 fatty acids against coronary heart disease. Earlier studies pointed out that low rates of coronary heart disease are found in indigenous people from Greenland and in Japanese people who commonly consume a diet rich in fish oil, which is a major source of omega-3 fatty acids. The present study found that omega-3 fatty acids can inhibit the synthesis and release of pro-inflammatory factors such as tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFalpha) and interleukin-1 (IL-1) and IL-2 that are released in case of heart disease. Further details can be found in the study.
