Summary

This study examined the benefits of vitamin supplements in the prevention of bladder cancer. 65 bladder cancer patients receiving Bacillus Calmette–Guérin (BCG) vaccination for cancer treatment were enrolled in the study. In addition to this treatment, the participants were given multiple vitamins in the recommended daily allowance (RDA) or RDA multivitamins plus 40,000 units vitamin A, 100 mg vitamin B6, 2,000 mg vitamin C, 400 units vitamin E and 90 mg zinc (multivitamin megadose). The researchers found that there were fewer cases of returning cancer in the group of patients receiving the multivitamin megadose. Furthermore, it was estimated that 40% of the patients in this study arm would have recurring cancer, as compared to 80% of the RDA patients. In conclusion, the researchers stated that megadoses of vitamins A, B6, C and E plus zinc decrease tumor recurrence in bladder cancer patients receiving BCG immunotherapy.
