Summary

This study was undertaken to evaluate the effect of curcumin with piperine (plant-derived compound) on oxidative stress (imbalance between free radicals production and the body antioxidant defenses) in patients with tropical pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas, TP). 20 patients with TP were randomly assigned to receive either 500 mg of curcumin with 5 mg of piperine, or a placebo for 6 weeks. Malonyldialdehyde (a marker of oxidative stress, MDA) and glutathione (antioxidant, GSH) levels were assessed. There was a significant reduction in MDA levels and a significant increase in GSH levels. The researchers concluded that curcumin with piperine exert antioxidant effects in tropical pancreatitis.
