Summary

Researchers from three Iranian research institutes investigated the effects of coenzyme Q10 on several factors influencing metabolic syndrome. This new and common lifestyle disease includes high blood pressure, obesity, and increased glucose and cholesterol levels. This trial was performed with 60 patients, aged 40 to 85 years, with overweight or obesity, type 2 diabetes, and coronary heart disease. The patients were allocated to two groups. The first group (30 patients) received a coenzyme Q10 supplement, and the second group (30 patients) received a placebo for 8 weeks. Blood samples were taken to measure different parameters and biomarkers. The results showed that coenzyme Q10 supplementation significantly improved insulin levels and increased antioxidant levels, compared to patients in the placebo group. This means that daily supplementation of coenzyme Q10 has beneficial effects in patients with metabolic syndrome. Further details can be found in the study.
