Summary

This Korean study investigated vitamin B12 deficiency in patients with type 2 diabetes using the conventional anti-diabetes drug metformin. 1111 patients with type 2 diabetes, taking metformin for at least 6 months, were included. The study showed that an increased dose of metformin was significantly associated with decreased vitamin B12 levels. Vitamin B12 deficiency occurred less often in patients taking multivitamins. These results indicate that metformin consumption is a significant factor related to the development of vitamin B12 deficiency. In contrast, supplementation of multivitamins may protect against this deficit. More details can be found in the study.
