Summary

This study investigated the protective effect of the natural compound resveratrol on diabetic nephropathy, a kidney disease that occurs in people with type 1 or type 2 diabetes. Oxidative stress plays a crucial role in the development of this complication. In order to examine the effect of resveratrol on kidney function and oxidative stress, diabetes was chemically induced in rats. After 4 weeks, the rats were divided into several groups: control rats, diabetic rats and diabetic rats treated with resveratrol (5 and 10 mg/kg, orally) respectively from week 4 up till week 6. At the end of the study, diabetic rats without resveratrol supplementation displayed signs of kidney dysfunction. In contrast, in resveratrol-treated animals kidney dysfunction and oxidative stress was significantly reduced. The authors concluded that resveratrol is an important antioxidant for the protection of the kidney against diabetic complications. More details can be found in the study.
