Summary
This Turkish study investigated the preventive effect of high-dose vitamin D supplementation on the occurrence of atrial fibrillation after coronary artery bypass surgery. 116 patients with vitamin D deficiency or insufficiency were divided into two groups: 58 patients (treatment group) received oral vitamin D 48h before the surgery. The other group, which also included 58 patients (control group), did not receive any supplement. The study results showed that atrial fibrillation occurrence was significantly reduced in the supplementation group, compared to the control group (12.07% vs. 27.59%). This means that high-dose vitamin D supplementation before surgery may be beneficial in this group of patients. More details can be found in the study.
