Summary

This Japanese trial investigated the effect of L-carnitine supplementation in patients undergoing hemodialysis, a treatment to filter wastes and water from the patients’ blood. The study participants were divided into a therapy group, administered with an oral L-carnitine supplement (20 mg/kg/day) for 12 months, and a control group (no L-carnitine therapy during the test period). Heart function was measured at the beginning and the end of the study. 75 patients in the therapy group and 73 patients in the control group were analyzed. In the therapy group, heart function improved significantly compared to the control group. In conclusion, this study showed that L-carnitine supplementation is helpful for hemodialysis patients. Further details can be found in the study.
