Summary

Growth failure is common in children infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). This study evaluated the relationship among growth, death rate and nutrition. Blood levels of vitamin A, carotenoids and vitamin E were investigated in 194 HIV-infected infants. The results showed that vitamin A and low blood levels of carotenoids were associated with decreased weight and with growth delay. Furthermore, low blood levels of carotenoids were linked to increased risk of death during HIV infection. Further details can be found in the study.
