High levels of the amino acid homocysteine increase the risk of atherosclerosis. This study evaluated the relationship between homocysteine, atherosclerosis and B vitamins. 750 patients with vascular disease were compared with 800 healthy people. Blood levels of homocysteine, folate, vitamin B12 and vitamin B6 were determined. The results showed that lower levels of folate and vitamin B6 increased the risk of atherosclerosis. Further details can be found in the study.
