Summary

Magnesium and vitamin E exert multiple beneficial effects on glucose (sugar) and lipid (fat) metabolism. This study, executed by Iranian researchers, aimed to determine the effects of magnesium and vitamin E on the metabolism of women with gestational diabetes. This study was conducted with 60 subjects diagnosed with gestational diabetes, aged 18 to 40 years. The patients were allocated to two groups receiving either 250 mg/day of magnesium oxide plus 400 IU (268mg)/day of vitamin E or a placebo (30 subjects) for 6 weeks. Patients who received magnesium plus vitamin E had significantly lower fasting plasma glucose and insulin levels than placebo. In addition, several lipid parameters also considerably improved after supplementation compared with the subjects in the placebo group. Overall, magnesium and vitamin E significantly improved the regulation of glucose levels and several lipid levels in women with gestational diabetes. More details can be found in the study.
