Summary

Vitamin B1 (thiamine) deficiency is prevalent in patients with type 2 diabetes, suggesting that correcting this deficiency may provide beneficial cardiovascular and metabolic effects. The objective of this study was to determine whether vitamin B1 supplementation is associated with an improvement of related parameters, like blood pressure and fasting blood glucose levels in patients with diabetes mellitus type 2. 86 subjects (60 patients with diabetes type 2 and 28 matched controls) were included in this study and were given vitamin B1 supplements (100 mg/day) for six months. Among others, glucose levels, vitamin B1 levels, and lipid parameters were measured. The results showed significantly improved lipid parameters and vitamin B1 levels in the blood of the diabetes group. The researchers concluded that vitamin B1 supplementation is a promising adjuvant therapy for patients with type 2 diabetes. More details can be found in the study.
