Summary

This review, conducted by several Australian research institutes, gives an overview of the effects of probiotics on immunity after intense physical exercise. Probiotics are well-known as modulators of the so-called microbiota. A well-functioning microbiota contains varied bacteria, which, among others, contribute to the regulation of the immune system and protection of the body from infections. Studies indicated that probiotics could improve health and reduce the susceptibility of illnesses, specifically in athletes who are especially susceptible to immune-related diseases. However, other research also showed that probiotics could be beneficial in the general population. This review demonstrated that probiotics can modulate disturbances in immune function and reduce the risk of several infectious diseases, especially after intense exercise. More details can be found in the review.
