Summary

This study aimed to determine the effects of a combined intake of probiotics and selenium on glucose and lipid levels in patients with gestational diabetes. To this end, 60 patients were allocated to two groups receiving either a placebo (30 participants) or a supplement containing probiotic plus selenium (30 participants) daily for 6 weeks. Selenium/probiotic supplementation significantly reduced fasting glucose (sugar), insulin concentrations, and insulin resistance. Furthermore, it significantly increased insulin sensitivity compared with the placebo. Several lipid parameters were also decreased. In conclusion, supplementation of probiotics plus selenium for six weeks had beneficial effects on glucose and lipid levels. More details can be found in the study.
