Summary

A study conducted by several German hospitals investigated the effects of low selenium levels on the mortality risk of COVID-19 patients. Selenium is an essential trace element and important for a well-functioning immune system. In this study, which included 33 participants, the measured selenium levels were significantly higher in surviving COVID-19 patients. According to this study, a strong association was observed between low selenium levels and increased mortality risk. Therefore, measuring selenium levels could provide diagnostic information, and supplementation could benefit this group of patients. More details can be found in the study.
