Summary

In this study, researchers aimed to investigate the (preventive) effect of vitamin D supplementation on the incidence of seasonal flu and respiratory tract infections in patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) during the winter and early spring. 223 patients with IBD were included and categorized in two groups: One test group received a vitamin D supplement (108 patients) and the other a placebo (115 patients). The results showed that the incidence of lung infections was significantly lower in the supplementation group. In conclusion, the researchers found that vitamin D supplementation may have a preventive effect against lung infections in patients with IBD. More details can be found in the study.
