This trial was conducted by Iranian researchers who examined the effects of vitamin D on heart cell death and changes in parameters indicating inflammation in patients who underwent coronary artery bypass surgery. 70 patients were involved and divided into two groups. The patients received either a vitamin D supplement or a placebo for 3 days before the surgery. Different immune function parameters were measured. The results showed that the number of dead heart cells was be reduced by vitamin D treatment. Furthermore, the researchers concluded that vitamin D treatment may improve inflammatory factors before and after surgery. More details can be found in the study.
