Summary

This study, conducted by Iranian research departments, investigated the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of alpha-lipoic acid on several factors involved in clinical symptoms of migraine. 92 women with migraine participated in this trial and received either 300 mg of alpha-lipoic acid or a placebo twice daily for 3 months. Blood samples were taken and analyzed at the intervention’s beginning and end. Furthermore, a questionnaire was used to determine depression, anxiety, and stress. At the end of the study, parameters indicating oxidative stress and inflammation had significantly decreased compared to the placebo group. In addition, depression, anxiety, and stress significantly decreased in the intervention group compared to the control group. Thus, the study suggests that alpha-lipoic acid supplementation improves oxidative, inflammatory, and mood conditions of patients suffering from migraine. More details can be found in the study.
