Summary

Turkish research departments investigated whether migraine in children is associated with vitamin D deficiency. An additional focus of this study was the effect of vitamin D on the frequency, duration, and severity of migraine attacks. 92 children with migraine were divided into two groups: Patients with low vitamin D levels who received a vitamin D supplement (group 1) and patients with normal vitamin D levels who did not receive vitamin D (group 2). Compared to patients with normal vitamin D levels, migraine frequency and duration were significantly higher before supplementation in group 1. However, after a supplementation period of 6 months, migraine duration was considerably shorter, and migraine frequency was significantly lower in group 1. This means a marked correlation between migraine and vitamin D levels. In conclusion, this study showed that vitamin D therapy is beneficial in young patients with migraine.
