Summary

Research departments from Italy and South Africa evaluated the effects of ubiquinol (coenzyme Q10) in elderly patients undergoing aortic valve replacement. 50 patients received either 400 mg/day ubiquinol (25 patients) or a placebo (25 patients) from 7 days before to 5 days after surgery. Among others, coenzyme Q10 levels and inflammation parameters were assessed, and heart function was evaluated during a 6-month follow-up visit. It was found that coenzyme Q10 supplementation significantly counteracted the decline of coenzyme Q10 induced by the surgery. Furthermore, the supplement helped protect the heart tissue and minimize oxidative stress due to its antioxidative function. For more details, please refer to the study.
