Summary

Different studies have shown that vitamin D has several beneficial properties and influences various mechanisms in the body. Vitamin D deficiency is widespread and may, for instance, be associated with diseases related to glucose (sugar) metabolism, like diabetes. This review, conducted by a Polish research department, showed that vitamin D is involved in various mechanisms essential for the function of different tissues. It also reduces oxidative stress levels and inflammation, which influence insulin resistance. In conclusion, vitamin D deficiency is one of the factors accelerating insulin resistance and, thus, the development of diabetes. More details can be found in the review.
