Summary

This study, conducted by Bengali and Swedish research institutes, investigated whether short-term zinc supplementation improves the immune response in malnourished children with acute Shigella infections in Bangladesh. 28 children aged between 12 and 59 months were supplemented with zinc and other micronutrients daily for 2 weeks. A control group with 28 children received a product that only contained micronutrients (without zinc). Apart from the supplementation product, all patients received standard antibiotic therapy. Results showed that additional short-term zinc supplementation could improve immune response in children with common infectious diseases like Shigellosis. More details can be found in the study.
